A two step reaction takes place
In the first step Chlorus acid is formed : Na+ClO2- + H+ —> HClO2- + Na+ (1)
In the second reaction Chlorine Dioxide is formed : 5 HClO2 —> 4 ClO2 + HCl + 2 H2O (2) or HClO2 - e- —> ClO2 + H+ (3)
